Mesotherapy: Contraindications and Side Effects

Mesotherapy is considered one of the most safe and simple treatment to apply, for its minimum risk of producing side effects.
Nevertheless there are conditions that could produce them, such as:
The drug that is injected:
The drugs that are used for mesotherapy produce local effects, but there are rare exceptions where a generalized reaction could be produced such asallergy, eczema or even anaphylactic shock (which would threaten the life of the patient)
The form of administration:
The administration of mesotherapy may produce pain in the injection site, as a result of the sting or because the product administered is acid or was applied in a dose larger than normal.
The puncture technique:
It can be caused by a lack of accuracy of the specialist, or because the area to be treated with mesotherapy is very vascularized, i.e. has veins that were broken from the needle entering the skin.
Bruises that occur are preventable with simple aspirin or similar medicines on the same day of treatment. Mesotherapy can also leave scars or discolored with hyperpigmentation, but they disappear after a few weeks.
Other possible, though very rare, incidents related to mesotherapy is the increase of sensitivity in the area where the injection was applied, which however disappears after a few minutes. Some substances can increase the temperature in the area and redden it.
As for contraindications, they are also rare, but you need to know them to see if you can submit to this treatment or not. These are the cases where it is not recommended mesotherapy:
  • Background of neoplasia (tumors)
  • Leukemia
  • Diabetes
  • AIDS / HIV or other infectious diseases
  • Septicemia or blood poisoning
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Taking these medicines: Aspirin and anticoagulants, Ginko Biloba.Allergy or sensitivity to anesthesia
  • Seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, heart problems
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding women
Mesotherapy can be applied in very young patients or adolescents, starting from 14 years of age, as it does not alter the organism’s development.
Please note that you must communicate these conditions to the doctor who will treat you, for him to consider whether it would be better mesotherapy or another treatment.
