Eyes can show the first sign of aging, as the skin around this area is delicate and looses moisture faster than other areas of the face. Moisture loss coupled with UV damage, stress and lack of sleep can further progress damage to that area. Dermatologists agree eye creams can smooth lines and hydrate to reveal brighter firmer skin around the eyes. Learn what ingredients dermatologists approve of to choose an eye cream that produces results.

Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an ingredient used in some eye creams. HA is a humectant, meaning it promotes the retention of moisture. Dry weather can make the skin under your eyes appear weary, dry and cracked. Some dermatologists suggest using a cream with HA to aid your skin in retaining moisture. Studies have shown with regular use, fine lines and wrinkles diminish. Jeannette Graf, MD, and author of "Stop Aging, Start Living", suggests ceramides are another helpful ingredient to help skin maintain hydration.

Retinol and Retin-A

Retinol or retin-A; are both derived from vitamin A and are two other ingredients found in eye creams. In 1988, John J. Voorhees, MD, chairman at the University of Michigan, performed a study that reported improvements in retention of collagen and diminished wrinkles. Today, it is used in eye creams to make the skin appear smooth and vibrant. Dermatologists suggest applying retinol and retin-A creams sparingly before bedtime only and ensuring that you wear sun-block, as retinol creams make skin more sensitive to the sun and can be drying.

Neuropeptides

Studies have shown that collagen production can be increased with neuropeptides if you have super-sensitive skin. According to dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD, "In studies applying various neuropeptide preparations directly to the skin, exciting clinical benefits were observed almost immediately upon application." The studies showed creams with neuropeptides produced, "visible improvement of the skin's resilience, tone, and texture."

Vitamins C and E

According to a study conducted with mice at the University of Oregon, skin's elasticity can improve with a cream that contains vitamins C and E. The study concluded that creams that only contain vitamin C can block some of the damage caused by free radicals, which damage DNA and quicken the aging process. The study went on to show that skin creams that contain both could prove to provide protection from UV rays. So, this could be why some dermatologists consider them to be potent anti-ageing ingredients.
